Preparing for the Unexpected: Batteries Vs. Generators for Home Power Backup

Are you ready for the zombie apocalypse??? Just kidding! (mostly).

But seriously, what are you to do when the power goes out for a long period of time, or at all for that matter? It’s happened before–remember Hurricane Sandy? My hometown was without power for two weeks! We were using our cars to charge our phones and turning the oven on to keep the house warm. People were lining up at gas stations for their vehicles and generators, and any extra gasoline they could get their hands on.

Luckily, two years later in 2014 Solar Me USA was founded, and since then we have been installing New Jersey homes with safe, renewable solar energy. Solar Me’s customers receive electricity from their panels that can be stored in a battery backup. These batteries are far better than gas powered generators for many reasons.

First of all, generators are noisy. They need fuel to run, which is not eco-friendly. Burning fuel creates emissions adding to a high carbon footprint. Only so much fuel can go into a generator, so eventually it will need to be refilled. Any leftover gasoline left in the generator for too long will cause problems with the equipment. Thus, periodic maintenance will be needed.

Battery backups are quiet and run independently compared to a gas powered generator. These batteries are connected to your solar system, so they operate seamlessly during a grid outage. Being that they run on renewable energy, they do not increase your carbon footprint. While they may have a higher upfront cost, they increase your home’s daily solar consumption and increase the value of your home, making it worth the price. Not to mention, they don’t need any ongoing maintenance (like generators do) and they are easier to set up.

Find out today what it would take to power your home in the event of a power outage, with a battery system powered by the sun!
